The Fishing Experience

There are many varieties of fish and fishing environments in South Africa.

“My father was an Outfitter for 35 years and often spent his money to taking us on fishing trips to exotic places like Mozambique, Seychelles or Kenya. In-between we would visit our local coast line, lakes and rivers many times a year fishing for anything that would bite. Big GT’s, Sea Pike, River Snapper, Grunter, King Mackerel, Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish, Tiger Fish, Yellow Fish, and Trout. I was once a fly fishing guide in the Seychelles for a few seasons, where the fishing was wild.” – Clayton Comins

“Saltwater Fly Fishing is the best fun, you can have with your pants on”

  • Deep Sea Fishing

The north coast of KZN has some awesome fishing, February to May being the best weather times. The summer months are generally better times, but good fish can be caught throughout the year.

The launch is normally done through the surf and a typical day’s fishing starts early morning till midday or when the fish stop biting. Trolling is done early in the morning for Game fish species like: Dorado, King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Sailfish, Marlin and Tuna.

  • Kosi Bay

This special place is on the north coast of KZN (KwaZulu-Natal) and I grew up fishing here since 1988 going there some years 5 times a year. It is a 3 lake estuarine system fed by the ocean. This is a beautiful place and great for families and children. I have caught hundreds of fish here over the years and it is home to many Kingfish species, River Snapper, Pickhandle Barracuda, Grunter, Bream and big GT’s to name a few. The summer months being the best time to fish this area.

  • Tiger Fishing

Tiger fish are ferocious and aggressive apex predators, and are a hard fighting freshwater game fish. An awesome fish to catch on light tackle and fly fishing equipment. But be prepared to work hard to land this Tiger – Tiger fish are famous fighters and will take your line in the blink of an eye! Tiger fish are indigenous to Africa and due to the ecological sensitivity of the area, most fishermen practice catch and release of Tiger fish.

  • Trout Fishing

The Natal midlands at the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains offers great still water and river fishing for both Rainbow and Brown trout.

  • Yellow Fish

This is an amazing indigenous fresh water fish that lives in our lakes and rivers throughout South Africa. They can be caught with bait and lures, but the most exciting and challenging way to fish for these yellow speedsters is with a fly. The Small Mouth Yellow average around 4lbs and can grow to 8lbs, its cousin the Large Mouth Yellow fish will grow to 40lbs and average 10 to 15lbs, this fish will test any fresh water tackle to its limit. We offer several guided areas:

The Vaal river near JHB is a great venue with big fish, during Spring and Autumn when the water is clean.

The Pongola and Assegai river near my home town also offer great fishing during the winter months.

The best fishing, in our opinion, is at Sterkfontein dam. This big dam is at the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains and boasts crystal clear water year round. The Small Mouth Yellow fish come into the shallows by the hundreds to spawn from October and stay there till February. Sight fishing for these fish with dry fly patterns, like hoppers and beetles, is exhilarating.
